WordPress upgrade woes?
July 6, 2010 – 5:00 pm |It is that time again, when a new version of WordPress comes out. Since this is a major release (3.0) and not a minor release like 2.9.2, site owners are starting to feel a little bit of pain due to the upgrade. Some people may not notice anything and happily blog along with no worries.
If you do start to notice issues with your WordPress website, the first thing we always try to see is if one of our plugins is causing the problem.
To troubleshoot the current issue:
First
Identify the problem you are having. In our case, when we would click the “Add an Image” button in our “Add New Post” page we would not see the normal upload window come up. Instead, we were redirected (taken to a new page) and shown what normally would be in the upload window but on a whole page.
Second
Keep the problem page open and open your plugins administrator page in a new tab (or new window if you prefer).
Third
Identify any plugins that work with the specific functionality you are having an issue with. Since we were creating a new post, we knew it had to be one of our post-related plugins. If you are not sure what each of your plugins does, feel free to just skip this step.
Fourth
Deactivate one of the plugins that you have singled out as possible causes of your problem. Retry the functionality of your site and if it works now, the most recently disabled plugin is the cause. If not, then keep going through your plugins.
If for some reason, you get through your list of possible trouble-making plugins you may want to try disabling the remaining plugins currently on your site. If you get through disabling all of the plugins and are still experiencing the problem you may want to consider sending us a message or looking into the WordPress support forums.
Fifth
Look and see if WordPress is telling you there is an upgrade available on your plugins page. If there is not an upgrade, check the plugin’s homepage for information by clicking the “Visit plugin site” link under the plugin title.

So far with WordPress 3.0 the only issues we have directly run into or heard about were related to one of our favorite plugins headspace2. There have been some issues with the post page where saving or uploading images does not behave as expected or saving posts may not work correctly. Luckily the guy(s?) over at Urban Giraffe, who made and maintain the headspace2 plugin, have already released a new version. You can download Headspace 3.6.33 here, or update it through your plugins page. Once we updated, all of our issues related to this plugin disappeared.
