If you are only going to register 1 domain and you choose to get hosting with DreamHost, you can save the money and steps below by cashing in on your one free domain from them.  The benefit here is that you can manage your hosting and domain registration in the same place. The downside is that when you get huge, which has been known to happen on the internet, you will probably want to move to a more powerful hosting plan, which means you will need to point your domain to a new location.
