After you have found your ideal domain name, go to 1and1 to register it.  All you have to do is find their “Domains” section, enter in the name you have already found and follow their instructions.  Creating an account is very easy with 1and1.

If you already have a 1and1 account, follow these instructions to register a new domain:

Simply login to your account and choose “Add Domain”

Once you click “Check Domain”, you will see something like the next image.  If the domain is or is not available, 1and1 will tell you right away:

You will follow through the next steps to complete the registration.  One important thing to do is to register your domain PRIVATELY.  The reason being that if you use your home or business address, you run the risk of having someone send you a nasty letter or SHOW UP at your front door.  Don’t believe me?  Go to a whois website (http://www.whois.net for instance) and put in your favorite URL. Their address and contact information shows up, creepy huh?  With private registration, emails are sent through a secure email address at your registrar, so people can’t contact you directly.

To set your domain as private, just select the radio button and proceed. You will need to agree to the terms and conditions.

Once you have completed the steps, your domain is purchased.  Well, sort of… All registrars have a waiting period of some sort.  The reason, is that they have to make sure that no other registrar is making a claim on this domain at the same time and they have to verify that this domain is in fact available.
