Reader Question: Is hosting a domain the same thing as maintaining it once it is set up?
July 31, 2010 – 12:30 pm |We recently got this question from a reader Carol:
Is hosting a domain the same thing as maintaining it once it is set up?
Matt responded with an analogy that describes the difference between a domain, hosting, and maintaining a website.
That is a really good question.
A domain is like an address to a house, it tells your internet browser where your website is.Hosting is like renting an apartment, where you pay someone for the space where all your stuff lives.Maintaining a website is like paying the maintenance guy to fix your pipes when they leak or to hang something on your wallsIn this case, you buy a domain (an address) that points people to your hosting (rented space) where your website files actually reside. With WordPress, maintaining the site is actually done mostly by the person who uses the site (in this case you) because they provide such a great interface for managing most everything about the site.Matt
