I spent several hours trying to figure out how to post a YouTube video to WordPress just to find out that it’s so EASY it actually becomes difficult. Here’s the basics:

Post just the web address that the video is at in the Visual Editor on WordPress, it does the rest of the work for you! Check it out:

It works the same with YouTube, Vimeo and Viddler. you can check out the post on my personal blog here: tjkimberly Star Wars Video

Or just look at this:

After you have found your ideal domain name, go to 1and1 to register it. All you have to do is find their “Domains” section, enter in the name you have already found and follow their instructions. Creating an account is very easy with 1and1.

If you already have a 1and1 account, follow these instructions to register a new domain:

Simply login to your account and choose “Add Domain”

Once you click the “Add Domain” link, you will be prompted to type in the URL that you want to buy:

Once you click “Check Domain”, you will see something like the next image. If the domain is or is not available, 1and1 will tell you right away:

You will follow through the next steps to complete the registration. One important thing to do is to register your domain PRIVATELY. The reason being that if you use your home or business address, you run the risk of having someone send you a nasty letter or SHOW UP at your front door. Don’t believe me? Go to a whois website (http://www.whois.net for instance) and put in your favorite URL. Their address and contact information shows up, creepy huh? With private registration, emails are sent through a secure email address at your registrar, so people can’t contact you directly.

To set your domain as private, just select the radio button and proceed. You will need to agree to the terms and conditions.

Once you have completed the steps, your domain is purchased. Well, sort of… All registrars have a waiting period of some sort. The reason, is that they have to make sure that no other registrar is making a claim on this domain at the same time and they have to verify that this domain is in fact available.

Follow our link below to get started!

If you are only going to register 1 domain and you choose to get hosting with DreamHost, you can save the money and steps below by cashing in on your one free domain from them. The benefit here is that you can manage your hosting and domain registration in the same place. The downside is that when you get huge, which has been known to happen on the internet, you will probably want to move to a more powerful hosting plan, which means you will need to point your domain to a new location.

If you plan on registering more than one domain, we suggest using 1and1 because their domains are cheap to register, their domain management tool is pretty easy to use, and they set up auto-renewals so that you never have to worry about someone stealing your domain name from you. Also, you can manage the DNS settings through their console extremely easily.

I have heard this complaint form a couple different people where all of a sudden their visual editor is gone and they only have the plain-text (HTML) version of editor. It seems like this mostly happens after an upgrade, but in older versions of WordPress it seemed to happen almost randomly. Either way, if you are used to the visual editor, having it disappear can be quite a jarring experience.

The solution is usually pretty easy. Just click your username in the top right corner of your WordPress administration screen. This will take you to your profile page.

The very first option on this page is a checkbox, which if checked will keep the visual editor from showing. Make sure this box is unchecked and then click the “Update Profile” button at the bottom of the page.

Now, go back to your “Add new” post page and you should see your editor. It will look similar to this:

Find a Domain

You need to have a domain. This is the name of the site or the URL that you type into a browser to get to your website. http://google.com is an example of a domain name.

To find a domain, you can use a tool like the one at BustAName.com. They give you two ways to find a quality domain name that is perfect for you. We suggest that you register your domain with 1and1 (detailed instructions below), but you once you find the name you want you can choose to register it with whomever you want.

There are two ways to find domains with BustAName. You can type in the name you want into the Quick Domain Check Tool and it will show you whether the .com, .net, or .org versions are available. Or you can type in key words, find synonyms, group the words and Bust A name will generate all the domains that match your criteria. Either way, this is an extremely useful tool and we have provided instructions for both below.

The first way, is to just type in a domain name and wait for the results to come back:

Or you can put in keywords to find the domain of your dreams. As you add keywords, BustAName will look for combinations and show you all the domains available from those combinations:

For each word in your list, you can click the blue arrow to find synonyms of this word.

You can also group similar words together so that you create domains that make sense.

Now that you have your favorite domain name and you know that it is available, it is time to register the name. You can do this through Bust A Name, through your hosting company (you get one free with DreamHost), or through 1and1. We will show you both DreamHost and 1and1.

The Related posts by tags widget will add a short list of articles that share tags with the article currently being read. This allows your visitors to click through another page on your blog and spend more time with your website. Also, users will be able to find other articles you have written that are on or near the same subject of the article they are reading. This gives your visitors a much better experience with your website.

Setup Instructions

You can install this with the normal plugin installation routine. Then just view a single post (click the title from your homepage) and scroll to the bottom to see the list of related posts.

You will have to make sure your posts have tags of course, otherwise nothing will be listed! When you have related articles, it will look similar to this:

Tags can be a very useful tool for allowing people and search engines one more way to find your blog articles. There are built in pages in WordPress for displaying related articles by tag, and you can even get a related posts by tag plugin to add links to related articles at the end of your post pages.

To add tags to your posts, look in the right sidebar of your post-editing page for the “Post Tags” box:

From this form field, you can enter the tags you want to use in a comma separated manner (as seen above). If you then click the “Add” button, the tags will be created in your database and added to this post. This is displayed in the following manner:

You can also “Choose from the most used tags”, by clicking the link in the bottom of the “Post Tags” box. This will display a tag-cloud of post tags. Click a post tag to associate it to your post

As you can see above, we clicked the “Posting” tag, and it was added to the list above.

If you go ahead and save your post, the tags are associated to your post. Visitors and search engines can now use the tags to find articles they are looking for!

The question we received through our contact form was:

Hey guys. I’m trying to figure out how to disable admin email notifications when a new user signs up without using a plugin. Any thoughts?

So I did some research into the code and found out that the answer is No, with the way WordPress is setup, you cannot disable this feature without a plugin. The reason is that WordPress does not have a built in setting to disable this functionality. All they provide is the normal “hook” interface that they provide for plugins.

Now, the consolation prize is that you can do this with a very simple plugin.

<?php

/*

Plugin Name: Disable wp new user notification

Description: Disables the email sent to the administrator when a new user creates an account.

*/

function wp_new_user_notification() {

//nothing here

}

?>

But, if you want the email to go out to the new users too, then you need to use a plugin that already exists called the Disable WP New User Notification Plugin. This plugin comes well recommended and does everything the default wp_new_user_notification function in the WordPress core does, without sending an email to the site administrator.
