Domain

A domain is like an address to a house, it tells your internet browser where your website is. Domains that you are familiar with are Wp-relief.com and Google.com. You typically will “point” your domain to your Hosting company and therefor your server, so that when people type in your domain name, they see your website.

Domain Registrar

A domain registrar is a little like the zoning committee in a new city, where they make sure that the space (a domain) you want to register for is not already taken.   They do the negotiation between the ICANN (domain registry) and you, so that it is easy to register a domain.

Hosting or “Web Hosting”

Hosting is like renting an apartment, where you pay someone for the space where all your stuff lives. A couple common hosting company names are DreamHost, LiquidWeb, Rackspace, and Media Temple.  These companies provide space on hardware (servers) in their data centers for your websites to live.

Registering a Domain

When you want to get a new domain or “address” for your website, you go to a domain registrar and purchase the rights to the domain name. This gives you the ability to match your domain to your website. The registrar links into an organization who is in charge of making sure that no domain name is registered to two different people at any given time. This organization is called ICANN.
